How to Plan a Speech

I’m publicly speaking for the first time and I’m feeling nervous but genuinely excited! The Mises Institute asked me to speak at their Orlando event next Saturday.

I scheduled a call with my advisor who specializes in public speaking and here are some tips he gave me.

  • Reel people in with a story, 75% of your speech should be stories, 25% facts.
  • Stories are more interesting than just facts, that’s why Ted Talks are successful.
  • People want to hear your perspective.
  • Build up suspense if you’re telling a joke.
  • Write an outline. I have 25 minutes to talk so I’ve divided up my speech into five parts, an intro with five main points then a conclusion/action items.
  • My advisor suggested action items for the audience to do after the speech. Basically putting my ideas into action.
  • Practice a few times.
