Shakespeare’s Theater and How Competition Made it Successful

I’m listening to a ten-part lecture series called Commerce and Culture and this episode was about Shakespeare’s success.

Here are some of the factors that lend to The Globe’s success.

Shakespeare’s Theater – The Globe

  •  Highly competitive and attracted talent
  • The pop culture of the 1620s
  • Competition healthy for culture
  • Shakespeare had to get entrepreneurial backers who had a surplus of wealth
  • The Globe was a big investment to build
  • It was attached to aristocratic patronage
  • The Globe also had shareholders
  • Shakespeare became high culture in the 18th century
