People Buy the Dumbest Things on eBay

About a week ago I received some Victoria’s Secret coupons for their Pink store and an idea popped into my head, “Would anyone buy this?”

I did what every good capitalist would do; put it up for auction on eBay! I actually did this as a joke because who in their right mind would buy coupons and think they’re saving money?

So to my surprise someone actually bought it! Would you believe it?

Take my bold statement of “Buying coupons is dumb and a waste of money.” The buyer determined value for it because he or she has found it important AND useful in some way. It’s like saying “Facebook arguments are a waste of time,” but I might value it because my voice is heard and other people who aren’t arguing might quietly reconsider their opinions. Likewise, I could say “Playing video games is a waste of time,” neither statement is wrong because of subjective value.

What can you find in your everyday life that you value but others might not?

Try your hand at selling random things and let me know how it goes for you. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure quite literally in my case because I was about to recycle my coupons.

I’ll admit this wasn’t the first time I sold Victoria’s Secret coupons but I thought maybe this was an outlier and I just got lucky. So I tried again and I’m certain it’s not a fluke.

This is why I have faith in the free market because the value of all goods and services is subjective.

The free market provides.
