Psalm 23: I Walk Through the Valley of the Shadow of Death

Psalm 23:1-6

A Psalm of David.
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Psalm 23 is one of the most famous verses from the Bible and has brought much comfort to those who are dying or lost a loved one. Usually, it’s read during a funeral.

Psalm 23 was written by King David during a difficult time in his life. Death and chaos were all around him and he feared the end was near until he remembered the Lord watching over him like a shepherd. King David found comfort, love, and guidance from his fear of death and evil, in God’s shepherd-like care.

Many of us, like King David fear death and rightly so. If one is without any sort of guidance on spiritual protection then the death and destruction of one’s soul will be inevitable. King David trusted in the Lord that he’ll be protected despite being constantly surrounded by evil. His faith and morale have been restored once he realized that God will take care of him.

For my Christian brothers and sisters, this means we’re safe in the Lord’s arms. Hope will be restored when you trust Him to guide you. Even in death, we have nothing to fear, but once you lose faith in God He can no longer watch over you because He can’t force you to stay in His flock.

If you’re a Christian you will never truly die. Your body may decay but your soul is eternal.
