The Babylon Bee Copywriting: How to Write Clickbait

The Babylon Bee is the funniest satire site. They’ve mastered the art of clickbait headlines and seamlessly tying together politics, current events, and Christianity.

“New Libertarian Convert Asks Ron Paul Into His Heart”

This headline is one of my favorites. It’s hilarious, relevant, and clever. Libertarians revere Ron Paul so much that to outsiders it looks as if we’re worshipping him. Most people who use social media, only feel compelled to read an article if the headline grabs their attention. First impressions are everything for clickbait.

Let’s breakdown this into a formula starting with the parts of speech. I’ve noticed that headlines usually start with a noun or an adjective, then a verb, and ends with another noun. Nouns, like people, capture your attention first since it’s more relatable versus starting with a verb. The basic structure for a Babylon Bee headline can look like this but it doesn’t have to be strictly followed.

  1. Noun or adjective
  2. Noun
  3. Verb
  4. Noun
  5. Adjective
  6. Noun

Then brainstorm for hilarious ideas. If you’re writing about politics pay attention to current events. Memes and inside jokes are a great source of inspiration. Here is another example from the Babylon Bee that follows this formula.

“Caravan Of Liberal Americans Makes Way Toward Socialist Paradise Of Venezuela”

Now let’s create an original clickbait headline.

“New Anarcho-Capitalist Convert Asks Forgiveness for Past Statism”

I wrote this with libertarians in mind so it’s more niche. I’ve seamlessly tied together common sayings from anarcho-capitalists (ancap) and Christians. I’ve asked my ancap friends what they thought of it and they couldn’t stop laughing. I made an outstanding first impression.
