I’m currently reading The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. The lessons that stood out to me were, “Resistance and Love” and “Resistance is Internal.”
Throughout the book, Pressfield explains why we experience creative blocks. It prevents us from achieving dreams like finishing a painting, writing a book, launching a business, or exercising consistently.
“Resistance is Internal.”
“It is self-generated and self-perpetuated. Resistance is the enemy within.”
Pressfield pinpoints “Resistance” as the root cause of creative blocks. Resistance is defined and personified as procrastination and excuses, and it all comes from within yourself. These excuses can look like family responsibilities, not enough time, or feeling exhausted after work. You certainly have time to pursue your dreams and hobbies especially if you binge-watch Netflix after work.
It’s tempting to give in to Resistance, but power through and remind yourself why your dreams matter to you. Your goals are achievable if you break it up into baby steps and do it every day for a few minutes.
“Resistance and Love”
“The opposite of love isn’t hate; it’s indifference.”
When you feel more Resistance it becomes more meaningful to you and the rewards of finishing the task will be greater. When you pour effort into a project, whether it be a massive mural or increasing sales, you’ll gain more in experience. Basically, what you put in is what you receive.
Tell me your dreams, desires, and goals.
What do you hope to accomplish but feel you can’t due to Resistance? Let me know, you’re not alone in this.
